At last a natural cure for insomnia ! Take one dose of a Lanarkshire derby between these two mediocre first division sides and sleep will follow.

By the time the first 20 minutes had passed, early stages of torpor had set in. However, in the 21st minute Airdrie broke into the Accies box and almost scored. But, in truly bizarre fashion it was Airdrie themselves who prevented the goal.

Brian McPhee tried a speculative overhead kick that had goal written all over it. With the ball speeding towards the empty net, Airdrie striker Gary Twigg decided to intervene. Perhaps he thought he would help the ball home, but instead he contrived to knock it clear.

Then on the stroke of half-time another equally bizarre event. A corner for Accies and the ball was swept into the box. From a ruck of players the ball seemed to hit the back of Pat Keogh, then crash off the forehead of Alan McManus and flash towards goal. Just when the own goal looked likely, little Kevin Barkey popped up on the line for Airdrie and cleared the danger.

After the break Airdrie came close again. This time Willie McLaren created the opening for McPhee with a great diagonal cross into the box. McPhee's early spectacular header almost paid dividends, but his effort clipped the post and rebounded to safety.

As full-time approached Brown Ferguson hit the post from a Mark Gilhaney free-kick, and then minutes later Steven Thomson again hit the post, this time from a Juanjo kick.

Then with the referee poised to blow his whistle, Hamilton substitute Brian Carrigan cracked in a volley from 16 yards. However, he was to be denied by the woodwork.
