A first-half header by Richie Foran was enough to see Motherwell through to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup following a had-fought local derby against Airdrie Utd.

Well could have been in front early in the game as Foran played Scott McDonald through on goal, but he was foiled by some brave goalkeeping by Stephen Robertson.

The visitors were showing their dominance and higher league status and they didn't have to wait long though for the opener and it came on 31 minutes, when Danny Murphy curled a free-kick high to the back post, where Foran rose above the defence to head the ball home.

Airdrie bounced back from this setback and went close on 37 minutes when a Stephen McKenna drive rebounded back off the crossbar.

Then a few minutes later Stephen McKeown saw a shot parried by Graeme Smith, before Gary Twigg headed the ball just over from the rebound.

For much of the second half Airdrie laid siege to the Well goal with Graeme Holmes going close on several occasions, but again Smith was on top form to deny the striker.

Airdrie manager Kenny Black brought on three strikers in a desperate bid to grab an equaliser and it almost paid off as Aime Koudou played the ball across the goal, but yet again a Smith hand foiled Bryan Prunty as he was ready to pull the trigger.

Again the home side went close towards the end as Twigg agonisingly headed a Brian McPhee cross just wide of the post.

However, it was the visitors who almost sealed the win when they broke through substitute Darren Smith, but Robertson was on hand with a superb save to deny the striker.
