Sons on the march

Dumbarton maintained their promotion push with a 2-1 win over Scottish Second Division rivals Airdrie.

Chances were at a premium in a poor first half with neither side able to create many real opportunities.

The visitors could have taken an early lead but Ryan Donnelly's overhead kick narrowly missed the post in the third minute.

Their next chance fell to Paul Lovering but he could only direct his header over the bar from William McLaren's corner.

The Diamonds took the lead in the 56th minute, McLaren producing a stunning free-kick from the edge of the box after James Creaney had brought down Donnelly.

Bryan Prunty levelled five minutes later when he collected Stephen Grindlay's pass in the box before finishing neatly.

And the Sons doubled their advantage six minutes later when Lovering turned Scott Agnew's cross past his own keeper.

Donnelly was dismissed in the final minutes after clashing with an opponent.
